George Vâlsan (1885–1935) was one of the founders of modern Romanian geography, a full member of the Romanian Academy, and a disciple of major European scholars. A professor at the universities of Bucharest, Iași, and Cluj, he created schools, institutions, and lines of research that helped define the geographical identity of Greater Romania. Deeply marked by the suffering caused by an accident, he transformed pain into a force of creation and a vocation for national service, seeing geography as a science of Romanian destiny. His poetry, written before his personal tragedy, expresses a lucid consciousness in which the beauty of the visible world opens toward transcendence. Through his life and work, George Vâlsan remains a model of culture, dignity, and love of country.

George Vâlsan (1885–1935) fut l’un des fondateurs de la géographie roumaine moderne, membre titulaire de l’Académie roumaine et disciple de grands savants européens. Professeur aux universités de Bucarest, de Iași et de Cluj, il créa des écoles, des institutions et des orientations de recherche qui contribuèrent à définir l’identité géographique de la Grande Roumanie. Profondément marqué par la souffrance à la suite d’un accident, il transforma la douleur en force de création et en vocation de service national, voyant dans la géographie une science du destin roumain. Sa poésie, écrite avant sa tragédie personnelle, exprime une conscience lucide, dans laquelle la beauté du monde visible s’ouvre à la transcendance. Par sa vie et par son œuvre, George Vâlsan demeure un modèle de culture, de dignité et d’amour du pays.
